Kekova Boat Trip And The Ancient City Of Simena

The peaceful Lycian Union is known to be the first civilization which adopted democracy as a form of government. The Ancient Lycian civilization was a union consisted of 23 cities along the coastline of Anatolia such as Olympos, Myra, Phaselis, and Simena. Simena means "mother goddess" in Luwian language and the city's history goes back to the 4th century BC. It was a coastal city in the union and as a result of some earthquakes in the region in the 2nd century AD some parts of the city sank into the sea and consequently the inhabitants abandoned the city. In the course of time, a small settlement named Kaleköy was built on the remains of the ancient city. During Kekova Boat Tour, you will see Simena city ruins, Kaleköy and Simena Castle from Medieval Age. While you are sunbathing on the top floor of the boat, you will be amazed by the spectacular sights around you and then you will leave yourself into the crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean Sea.

Church Of St. Nicholas

Known in different cultures with different names - such as Santa Klaus, Pere Noel, Weihnachtsmann, Sinterklaas - Saint Nicholas or Nikolaos of Myra was born in 300 BC in Patara into a wealthy family. Saint Nikolaos, who is believed to have spent his wealth and fortune on the poor and to have performed many miracles, died in the city of Myra where he had served as archbishop. Santa Claus is known as the protector of children, students, travellers, sailors and the poor. When he passed away, a church was erected on his name in Myra and his tomb was placed inside this church. Now open to the public as a memorial museum, the church has been an important place of pilgrimage for Christians. The building, which is also notable for its architecture, includes Santa Claus's tomb, frescoes, icons and mosaics. Outside the building, a statue of Santa Claus which is a gift from Russia greets the visitors. Visiting this mystical and historical church will be an exciting activity for you during your holiday.

The Ancient City Of Myra

An important centre of settlement up until 11th century AD, the Ancient City of Myra is among the places to be seen in Demre. There are two separate necropolis in the city. The rock tombs carved in the mountains will amaze you. The acoustic of the 11,000-seat theater is awesome. While you are sitting on the seats of this theater, walking around the streets of the city, walking in antique baths and temples, you will feel like you have made a time travel to ancient times.
